LEEDers By Design
While LEED came about in the 1990’s, it advocates some of the sustainable design principles JSA has been practicing for 30-plus years. Current LEED registered projects include the PTC’s Western Training Facility and PA State Police Barracks, Carmax Office Complex & Morristown Parking Authority Office.

Can “environmentally-friendly” really be economically smart?

Absolutely. If you incorporate sustainable design techniques like the ones we’ve been using for more than 30 years. They can save on energy costs. Sometimes significantly over the life of a building. For example, we will take advantage of natural elements such as sunlight, vegetation, and wind paths.

Before the “green building movement” stormed onto the scene with the advent of the LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system — developed to encourage owners to build “smarter” by using recyclable materials and natural elements — JSA was well into three decades of sustainable design. Now that LEED is paving the way for national standards, we’ve adapted accordingly. Key members of the JSA team are now LEED-accredited professionals, and that number is growing.

Because of our experience with sustainable design — and the fact that we’re located in Pittsburgh, the city that leads the nation in LEED-accredited design — understanding and applying these “new” guidelines is not an issue. We’ve welcomed, practiced, and embraced them.
